Penang Port Sdn Bhd is the authorized port operator appointed by the Penang Port Commission of Malaysia, under the purview of the Ministry of Transport. As a company, there were on a mission to improve their engine efficiency and reliability, while also reducing their carbon footprint. As partners, both Shell and Penang Port adopted an innovative approach to realize an on-board trial of Shell FuelSave Diesel, which is Shell’s most advanced economy diesel for automotive diesel engine applications.

We observed an improvement in our engine operating efficiency, which allowed us to extend our maintenance intervals*. We calculate that this in turn helped us save costs from reduced downtime, manpower and spare parts*. We also observed a reduction in carbon deposits on our engine injectors, resulting in cleaner combustion*. We estimate that this translated into a saving of more than 3%* in fuel consumption.

Based on customer’s own statement, estimates, assumptions and observations during the customer’s day-to-day ferry operations between the dates of May 2012 to February 2013. Compared to regular diesel without fuel economy formula. Actual savings may vary according to vehicle, driving conditions and driving style. Internal Shell tests with heavy duty engines used in road transport vehicles have shown fuel savings of up to 3% compared to regular diesel without fuel economy formula.

Penang Port technicians also estimate that they have successfully cut their emissions by approximately 540 metric tons2 of CO2 over the course of 10 months. (This was based on the customer’s own independent test results. They assumed in their calculations that the equivalent of one litre of fuel produces approximately 2.63kg of CO2.)

1 Based on customer’s testing results and one litre of diesel fuel produces about 2.63kg of CO2 in heavy duty engines up to and including Euro III.
