The Nature Nurtures Programme seeks to cultivate an appreciation for nature and promotes a sense of confidence and well being in the teens.
Shell believes that every child deserves the best opportunities to fulfil his potential. The Nature Nurtures Programme (NN) sprouted up in January 2007 in collaboration with the National Parks Board (NParks). Today it works with NorthLight School (NLS) to provide enrichment opportunities for teenagers who deserve more guidance in life.
Away from the conventional school environment, NN takes place mostly at the soothing environment of the Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve. The teens partake in meaningful activities including coastal clean ups and mangrove salvaging. Through that, they cultivate an appreciation for nature. More importantly, the participants hone life skills, teamwork, and even gain a sense of satisfaction from being involved with the community.
NN is also a platform for Shell employees to contribute to community. Shell volunteers have something to take away from NN as well – they get to witness the teens becoming more mature, responsible and self-confident.
Students from Northlight School have benefitted from the programme:
Following the finale of the Nature Nurtures Programme 2012, Pulau Bukom Manufacturing Site collaborated with NorthLight School (NLS) on a new gardening project in Pulau Bukom.
Facilitated by National Parks Board (NParks), the NLS students and Shell Bukom staff planted different species on a dedicated gardening space on the island. Plants like aquatic ginger, bamboo orchid, seashore lily, and red tree-vine (‘mali-mali’) were especially chosen to suit Bukom’s tropical climate and thrive.
The project was a great opportunity for NLS students to deepen their appreciation for nature and develop their project management skills.
