In the world of mobility, Asia is a region made up of different markets moving at different speeds. Some countries are rapidly embracing electric vehicles (EVs), some are increasing reliance on locally grown biofuels, while others remain relying only on conventional fuels. According to Min Yih Tan, Senior Vice President of Shell Mobility Asia, Shell has the right foundation to navigate this transition.

“We have the brand, the technology, the assets, and most importantly, our people with the capabilities,” Tan said in a recent interview.

On the electric mobility (e-mobility) front, Singapore aims to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040, making EV infrastructure a key focus. With this shift in mind, Shell has been actively expanding its charging network, supporting both government and business partners – such as the Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA) and more – to make EV charging more accessible for all.

In light of these changes, one of the biggest questions asked of Shell is whether traditional service stations will become obsolete as EVs take over. While they will undoubtedly look different to the stations of today, Tan is confident that the key to sustained success will continue to be the ability to provide superior customer experience and connection.

“If I may paraphrase Mark Twain, the demise of fuels retailing is grossly exaggerated. We in Shell Mobility can bring so much more than just an electric charger. We understand drivers as we have been doing this for over 100 years,” said Tan. “So, besides charging, we continue to improve our quality fuels and convenience store offerings.”

Shell has been evolving its service station sites into destinations offering a mix of services, including EV charging, convenience stores, and even fresh coffee and fresh food with the newly-launched Shell Café.

Growing without refineries

Another significant development is Shell’s recent divestment of the Energy and Chemicals Park in Singapore. Some might wonder if this signals a retreat from the market, but Tan makes it clear that Shell’s Mobility business is here to stay.

“We are certainly here to stay, not just in Singapore but across Asia,” he said. “We’ve strengthened and grown our Mobility business globally without refineries, relying on our robust trading, supply, and marketing businesses.”

By leveraging its global network and local expertise, Shell is able to provide high-quality fuel, reliable EV charging infrastructure, and other services without being tied to traditional refinery operations.

The road ahead

Tan believes that Shell’s future in Asia is bright, fuelled by its ability to adapt and innovate. “What we have shown in Singapore and what we are doing across Asia is that we want to be on the front foot, leading the change,” he said.

The company is also strengthening its partnerships with automakers such as Hyundai, BYD, and BMW to expand its charging network and reassure customers that reliable EV infrastructure is available. “There’s always anxiety about whether you can find a charger,” Tan noted. “But with Shell Recharge, you’ll be okay – and you can enjoy a cup of coffee while you wait.”

Looking ahead, Shell Mobility is positioning itself for the next phase of growth. “We play a long game, and victory belongs to the most tenacious,” Tan said, quoting Roland Garros. “So let’s all be world-class and take the next chapter for ourselves.”

With a strong foundation, trusted brand, strategic partnerships, and a clear vision to make life’s journeys better, Shell Mobility is set to drive the future of transport across Asia – one charge, one coffee, and one journey at a time.
