Facing challenges brought by climate change, the Hong Kong SAR Government has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. While more businesses are actively pursuing this goal, selecting suitable low-carbon energy solutions often presents significant hurdles. For example, concerns about infrastructure compatibility, operational impact, and the need for engine modifications increase the complexity and cost of transition.

Shell Renewable Diesel can be widely used across various industries and equipment types, including construction, transport and logistics, and industrial sectors.

Shell Renewable Diesel, often referred to as HVO or HEFA, is made from renewable components such as vegetable oil, animal fats and waste feedstock.

Biodiesel, or FAME is derived from same feedstocks, but it is produced through a different process. Using a catalytic hydrotreating process, raw materials of Shell Renewable Diesel are converted into a high-quality paraffinic diesel fuel while Biodiesel is produced through a different process called esterification

At Shell, we place great value on the quality of our fuels and are committed to meeting our customers’ needs. We have expert technical teams around the world to ensure that our fuels undergo extensive testing before being released to the market. Shell Renewable Diesel offers a variety of advantages :

  • Up to 90% less CO2e 1 emissions compared to EN590 B0 diesel2 on a life cycle basis3.
  • Drop-in Fuel - Shell Renewable Diesel can be used as a direct replacement

Modern Terminals Limited started our sustainability journey as early as 2005, and in 2021, we established our comprehensive Sustainability Strategy with long-term goals for all our five sustainability pillars.

Among these are two highly ambitious decarbonization targets: 1) To eliminate direct greenhouse gas emissions from operations by 2030. 2) To become carbon neutral by 2050.

To reduce carbon emissions, we began converting machinery and vehicles to electric power years ago. However, we still faces challenges for some heavy duty machinery such as long charging times and limited range. Hydrogen energy development in Hong Kong is still in its early stages, making large-scale application difficult in the short term.

Renewable diesel or hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) has already been widely adopted in Europe. It can be a drop-in fuel to replace traditional fossil diesel without requiring engine modifications for engines approved to use EN 15940 fuel. Until breakthroughs in other low-carbon energy technologies are achieved, using renewable diesel allows us to avoid unnecessary additional investments.

{VO}

Modern Terminals Limited had previously attempted to import Renewable Diesel on their own but faced numerous challenges. Shell’s one-stop service solution helps businesses overcome these challenges.

Previously, there was no supply of HVO in Hong Kong. Since HVO had never been imported into Hong Kong, Modern Terminals actively engaged in discussions with relevant government departments, all of which were supportive. However, we faced several challenges, including transportation arrangements, as the delivery equipment has to meet specific international standards.

We also had to handle customs declarations and clearance with the relevant government departments, and consider follow-up tasks such as fuel storage and refueling at the terminals. We received a positive response from Shell Hong Kong, who were able to manage all these arrangements, which led to the successful collaboration.

In October 2023, Modern Terminals became the first company in Hong Kong to deploy this renewable diesel in operations.

{VO}

During the Renewable Diesel trial programme, Shell collaborated with The University of Hong Kong to conduct comparative air pollution testing* between renewable diesel and regular diesel at Modern Terminals. The study adopted an ABA cycle testing across four heavy-duty machines.

The results showed that, compared to regular diesel, using renewable diesel led to:

  • 18.9% reduction in carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, and
  • 26.1% reduction in black smoke emissions

We are satisfied with the results of the trial. During the period, the machinery operated smoothly overall, with no abnormalities observed, and the fuel efficiency was comparable to that of traditional diesel. HVO significantly reduces carbon monoxide and black smoke emissions compared to traditional diesel, demonstrating its potential to reduce environmental pollution.

Following the success of this trial, we have shared the results with other companies on various occasions, hoping to encourage more businesses to adopt HVO. By doing so, we aim to increase demand, stabilize supply, lower prices, and enhance overall economic efficiency—ultimately facilitating HVO to be widely used in Hong Kong.
