At Shell we want to help drive a more sustainable future by reducing our carbon footprint. We are committed to providing lower-carbon alternatives to the products that we offer.
To achieve this, we are focused on two strategic initiatives:
- Reducing the CO2e intensity of our own products.
- Helping customers manage their sustainability needs.
AVOID
We avoid emissions by optimising the efficiency of our production processes and product designs and by aiming to embed circular economy thinking at the heart of our business.
REDUCE
We reduce emissions by improving the energy efficiency of our facilities and increasing the use of renewable energy to help reduce the CO2e emissions of our supply chain.
Our most advanced fuels for heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, Shell FuelSave Diesel with DYNAFLEX Technology2, is designed to help lower CO2 emissions3 and black smoke4. Their dual detergent formulation works to clean up injectors from carbon deposits and prevent further build-up, enabling improved engine efficiency and less wasted energy3.
INTRODUCING NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS
In addition, Shell supports CO2 offset projects around the world to compensate for hard to abate emissions in our customer’s business. The projects aim to protect, transform or restore land. In this way, nature absorbs more CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. Through an independent third-party accreditation process these projects have demonstrated that carbon emissions have been avoided or taken from the atmosphere through an auditing process.
The protection and restoration of natural ecosystems could play an important role in limiting global warming to below 1.5°C, while bringing additional environmental and social benefits, according to studies cited by the International Panel on Climate Change.
They also have further benefits such as offering alternative sources of income to local communities, improving soil productivity, cleaning air and water, and maintaining biodiversity.

TONG TAR TRANSPORT SERVICE PTE LTD’S FLEET USES SHELL FUELSAVE DIESEL WITH NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS
Tong Tar Transport Service Pte Ltd is a bus transportation company in Singapore with a fleet of more than 100 buses and coaches. Tong Tar recognises the benefits of using Shell FuelSave Diesel to lower CO2 emissions3 in its operations. Starting from October 2021, bus passengers of Tong Tar Transport are also able to enjoy more sustainable journeys where the emissions of the rides have been offset with Nature Based Solutions.
KATINGAN MENTAYA, INDONESIA PROJECT
We work with projects around the world that help reduce CO2 emissions, while improving the lives of local communities and protecting biodiversity. The carbon credits we offer customers may be taken from any of these projects. One example is the Katingan Mentaya in Indonesia:
The Katingan Project collaborates with 34 Indonesian villages to not only reduce emissions, but to conserve local wildlife populations and enable the sustainable development of the local community.
The project:
- Received the Triple Gold Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CBB) status
- Covers 149,800 hectares of protected intact peat swamp forest
- Protects the vital habitat for 5 Critically Endangered Species and 31 Vulnerable Species
- Generates 7.5 million carbon credits per year

I am doing an experiment on how to measure the health of the peat in the forest.

Video shows Jona quickly picking up a yellow bag from the floor and going down a white stairwell. This cuts to a first-person view looking out over the bow of a small boat as it travels down a narrow river with dense green forest on either side.

The area that we are overseeing is very large, about 157,000 hectares.

We see Jona in a red plaid shirt and life jacket walking through the river pulling a small wooden boat through shallow water with the help of another person. The boat is loaded up with bags under a tarp. This then cuts to Jona and three other people putting a long rod with a metal blade on the end into leaf covered ground.

Peat is formed from many layers of fallen leaves.
The process takes a long time.
It also takes a long time to decompose because the leaves are wet.
But it’s great at storing carbon.

Jona and the other three people then pull the long rod from the ground to reveal a mud like brown substance on the blade called peat.

The age of the samples that we collected from a depth of 50 cm is about 2,000 years old.

The canal drains a lot of water from the peat and dries it out.

Preserving the health of the peat is very important because we are restoring the ecosystem.

Shot now focuses on the ground as a woman repeatedly drives a spade into the soil to dig a hole. We then see other women shoveling the soil back around the freshly planted crop. We pan out to see more women crouched around the crops using their hands to pack the soil closely around the new crop.

The project helps educate local communities on greener and more sustainable farming practices. So that farmers can grow their crops in a way that protects and respects the surrounding forest.

We then are close up on the trunk of a tree as someone uses a machete to chop it in half. Shot then changes to a close up of a little girl and little boy picking a vegetable off of a vine.

Since we started farming with organic methods, we’ve seen all kinds of benefits.

We see a close up of someone sharpening a machete blade with a stone. This quickly changes to a large leaf falling off a plant as if it was being chopped. The video then pans out and we see a woman using a hook blade to pull down leaves high above her head. The scene changes to the ground and we see multiple leaves continue to drop one after another forming a pile of leaves on the ground.

It gives us a better income and that helps our community thrive - all of us.

Women begin to stack the leaves into neat piles. We now have a close up shot on the spine of a leaf where a woman shears both sides of the leaf off the spine. She then neatly folds the pieces of leaves into bunches.

We make our fertilizer without chemicals now - all of it is homemade.

Video cuts to two men on the river. They unpackage neatly bundled bunches of leaves from their bikes in the pouring rain. They carry the large bound bunches of leaves and pile them into their wooden boat.

Our crops are more abundant and the fertilizer doesn’t damage the soil.

The peat swamp forest has a high carbon level, so when there is a fire, it produces high emissions.
[That’s why it’s really important that we protect it.]

When there’s a fire in the peat swamp forest, it’s very difficult to handle

The camera angle then changes, and we see the person walking through the jungle from above. The person lays down the orange case and opens it. He takes out a drone camera and begins flying it with the handheld control.

We then see a person walk up to a radio dispatch console on a desk. Next to the console is a monitor with various live surveillance video scenes playing simultaneously. Referring to the work we are doing now, it actually feels like a profound responsibility.

We see a firehose being unraveled as it spins on a pipe through the center of the firehose. One person is holding the nozzle of the hose to direct the water. The next scene is a close up of a hand attaching the other end of the hose to a water pump, as another person pulls the string on a generator to power it up.

We then see the top of the pipe where a firefighter is holding it in place pushing the water down into the jungle floor. Through thick smoke in the background, another firefighter can be seen guiding the hose. As we pan out, we see a few firefighters walking towards the smoke. One of the firefighters has a rolled-up hose on his shoulder.
