Shell today announced that in conjunction with the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix, it has leveraged its global technical partnership with Ferrari to benefit The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) through a series of fund-raising activities.  Shell Chief Executive Peter Voser flew into town to present a cheque of $150,000 to Patrick Daniel, Editor-in-Chief of English and Malay newspapers at Singapore Press Holdings, who accepted it on behalf of the more than 10,000 children who benefit from SPMF.

Tan Chong Meng, Shell’s Executive Vice-President of Global Business-to-Business, says, “We are very happy to support and contribute to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, especially during this period when economic conditions make it more challenging for many families to get by.  We believe that children who are helped by the fund will be able to better concentrate on realising their academic and individual potential".

Shell staff, customers and business associates had readily come forward to rally behind the SPMF.  Dollar-for-dollar matching by Shell for staff donations resulted in over $54,000 being collected over a two-week period.  Shell customers and business associates - some from overseas - participated in a charity golf challenge on Saturday (26 September 2009) morning, where each birdie earned the charity $1,000.  In addition, carnival games on the sidelines saw the players contribute to the charity for each game played.

A charity auction that leveraged Shell’s global technical partnership with Ferrari capped the morning’s experience with customers, business associates and friends of Shell actively bidding to support the SPMF.  Racing memorabilia autographed by Scuderia Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, including replicas of both drivers’ 2009 helmets, raised an encouraging more than $56,000 to benefit SPMF.

Notes for Editor
Last year, Shell also held a charity auction of Ferrari memorabilia in conjunction with the first Formula One Singapore Grand Prix.  Proceeds from the auction and Shell’s pledge of $1,000 for each birdie scored during a charity golf session resulted in a $75,400 donation to Fei Yue Family Service Centre located in the South West district of Singapore.  The donation was extremely well-received and Shell hopes to be able to make this charity effort an annual affair.
