Shell Rewards 100,000 Drivers Globally for Learning How to Save Fuel for Life

09/05/2009

Singapore FuelSave ambassador Eunice Olsen puts forward the challenge to Singapore motorists at the 25th Shell Eco-marathon

Against the backdrop of the 25th annual Shell Eco-marathon at the Euro Speedway near Dresden, Germany, Shell Singapore’s FuelSave Ambassador Eunice Olsen today challenged Singapore drivers to learn how to cut motoring costs for life, save money – and be rewarded for doing it.

Building on Shell’s vision to help customers get the most out of every drop, the aim of this international initiative is to get as many drivers as possible to log on to a website featuring a newly-launched training tutorial, designed to educate even the most savvy drivers on how to save more fuel.

To encourage motorists from all over the world to log on to this digital training programme and benefit from it, the first 100,000 drivers who complete the training will receive a cash-equivalent prize. Besides Singapore, the other six participating countries in this initiative are Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, The Netherlands and Turkey.

“I’m very encouraged to see that Shell is dedicated towards teaching drivers how to use less fuel. This initiative that aims to empower 100,000 motorists with the necessary information to help them save fuel for life, and walk away with a reward at the same time, will hopefully enable drivers to realize that minor adjustments can certainly go a long way.” said Shell FuelSave Ambassador Eunice Olsen.

Singapore motorists who complete the training between 9 May and 8 August 2009 at www.shell.com.sg/everydrop will receive a $10 Shell fuel voucher.

“Ninety percent #1 of drivers in Singapore say they welcome more information on how to be more fuel efficient and are willing to change their driving behaviour to save more at the pump. Today, we are setting out to help meet their needs, and to show over 100,000 drivers globally how 10 simple tips can help them save 10 per cent or more fuel,” said Henry Chu, General Manager, Retail Sales & Operations, Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd.

He added, “Approximately 10 million customers come to our forecourts around the world each day in these difficult times and this year we are working even harder to show our customers how to get the most out of every drop of fuel when they fill up at Shell.”

Eunice Olsen launched the initiative after two days of intensive coaching and training, culminating in an exciting One-Litre Challenge. One of seven Shell FuelSave Ambassadors attending the 25th Shell Eco-marathon, each representing his or her country, Eunice Olsen competed to complete a course designed to reflect real-life driving, using just one litre of Shell fuel with Fuel Economy formula.

The announcement was made against a backdrop of over 200 competing teams at the 25th Shell Eco-marathon in the final hours of building and racing vehicles designed to travel the farthest possible on the least amount of fuel. The 2009 winners will be announced on Sunday, 10 May 2009.

Commenting on the Shell Eco-marathon, Eunice Olsen said, “The effort, ingenuity, dedication and innovative application of technology by these students are inspiring. I am really looking forward to cheering on our Singapore student teams, who have put in a lot of hard work for this. Outside the main event we also had some fun competing to drive as far as we can on one litre of fuel in a road-going car. I’m now much more aware that every little action counts when you're trying to save fuel and I hope this experience will help drivers save 10 to 25 per cent of their fuel usage right now – which is very achievable.”

Shell is the world's largest fuels retailer with about 45,000 retail stations in over 90 countries. Shell has over 100 years of experience developing the technology and services that make it a leading provider of innovative new fuels today. In the 1920s, Shell introduced Shell Dynamin, a fuel that offered some of the most advanced engine efficiency of its time. In the 1950s, Shell fuel included a proven mileage ingredient.

In 2006, Shell launched Shell Unleaded with Fuel Economy formula and set a Guinness World Record for fuel economy by helping a couple from Australia, John and Helen Taylor, to circumnavigate the globe using only 24 tanks of Shell Unleaded with Fuel Economy formula. In 2007, Shell added to its fuel economy product offerings with the launch of new and improved Shell Diesel with Fuel Economy formula. 2007 also saw the release of the Shell Global Fuel Economy Report, which revealed the thoughts of 3,300 people across 11 countries, showing people's awareness of fuel economy.

Rounding out its rich heritage in fuel economy is the Shell Eco-marathon. Back in 1939, Shell started the predecessor of today's popular Shell Eco-marathon, an annual competition in Europe and America challenging students to build and drive a vehicle that will go the furthest using the least amount of fuel. This initiative links to the responsibility Shell has as an energy company - to work to reduce the impact of its business on the environment. The 2008 Shell Eco-marathon attracted over 250 teams of young students from 20 countries. The winning team achieved a fuel consumption equivalent to 3,382 km on a single litre of fuel. This year, the Shell Eco-marathon celebrates its 25th anniversary in Germany from 7-9 May 2009.
