Shell congratulates Singapore teams for excellent performance at first Shell Eco-marathon Asia
14/07/2010
Singapore teams win 7 awards including overall winner of the Urban Concept category
From among 81 teams and 10 countries across Asia, Singapore teams won four out of 15 on track and three off track awards at the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia, which was held at the Sepang F1 circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 8 – 10 July 2010.
In the Urban Concept Category, a team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) using hydrogen fuel was tops with a distance of 612.4 kilometres per litre. It also won awards in safety, technical innovation and design.
The kick-off in Asia last Thursday made the Shell Eco-marathon a truly global event for the very first time. It has been running in Europe since 1985 and the United States since 2007.
The annual competition challenges students to design, build and drive a vehicle that can travel the furthest distance on the least amount of fuel. Eight teams from Singapore competed in the competition.
Student teams participated in either the Prototype or Urban Concept categories. For the Prototype category, teams entered futuristic prototypes – streamlined vehicles focused on maximising fuel efficiency through innovative design elements, such as drag reduction.
For the Urban Concept category, teams entered more "roadworthy" fuel-efficient vehicles. Aimed at meeting the real-life needs of drivers, these vehicles are closer in appearance to the cars seen on roads today. For both categories, teams can use any conventionally available energy source – including fuels such as diesel, gasoline and liquid petroleum gas (LPG), as well as alternative fuels such as hydrogen, biomass and solar.
The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic participated in the Shell Eco-marathon for the first time and took home awards in the Diesel Fuel Award and Fuel Cell Grand Prize categories respectively.
Nanyang Technological University’s Prototype vehicle came first in the Solar Grand Prize category.
Lee Tzu Yang, Chairman of Shell Companies in Singapore, congratulated the Singapore teams on their excellent performance. He added, “The students demonstrated creativity in their vehicle design, practiced good safety measures on and off track, and showed innovation in their use of energy types. I am proud of the performance by the Singapore students.”
