Clarification on "DO NOT PUMP FULL TANK OF PETROL" e-mail circulating on the Internet

An e-mail that has been circulating on the Internet alleges that Shell and other petroleum retailing companies and their retail operators are cheating motorists by tampering with the fuel pump equipment at retail stations. The e-mail also alleges that motorists refuelling at stations receive less petrol in their vehicle’s tank as a result of the tampering with litre gauges at the fuel pumps.

Shell Singapore would like to assure all motorists refuelling at our retail stations that we conduct full investigations into allegations of illegal business practices - an allegation which is taken very seriously.

All filling nozzles have a built-in cut-off device that is intended to reduce the possibility of customers being splashed with fuel during filling. This device works by sensing the pressure coming out of the vehicle's petrol tank. As the tank gets fuller, the pressure increases in the filling neck of the car and this is sensed by a valve in the nozzle which closes the flow.

The hose and nozzle still hold fuel so there is no draining back to the stations' underground tanks. The metering of the fuel takes into account the amount of product in the hose and nozzle at the start and finish of the transaction so that the customer only pays for what is delivered into the tank.

Pumps are calibrated annually and all pump equipment have also been checked and tested, and found to be properly calibrated in full compliance with all regulations.

Shell Singapore categorically denies these allegations and considers the circulation of the e-mail in question as malicious and slanderous to the reputation and business practices of Shell.

If you know of anyone who is circulating the e-mail in question and/or spreading rumours regarding the Shell's reputation, products and services, please inform us immediately at www.shell.com. Shell Singapore will not hesitate to report such conduct to the authorities and will consider legal action against any such persons.

Thank you for your support, understanding and co-operation.
