    Our values
    Our core values

    Our business activities in Singapore
Singapore is an important hub for Shell’s businesses, which include:

    • Shell's 500,000 barrels-per-day Bukom refinery is today the largest Shell refinery in the world in terms of crude distillation capacity. This makes Singapore a key regional supply and trading centre for the Group in the East. Some 90 percent of Bukom's products are exported to countries in the region and beyond.
    • Shell’s largest petrochemical production and export centre in the Asia Pacific region. Shell’s investments in the Singapore petrochemicals industry include two polyols plants, a joint-venture styrene monomer and propylene oxide plant and other joint ventures. In addition, the Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex (SEPC) is an integrated refinery and petrochemical project comprising modifications to Bukom, a world-scale ethylene cracker and a world-class mono-ethylene glycol plant.
    • Shell has one of the largest single-branded retail networks in Singapore, providing customers with a wide range of quality products and services.
    • Shell ranks as one of the biggest marine bunker fuels and lubricants suppliers in Singapore, with dedicated barges to supply our global shipping customers calling at the Singapore Port.
    • Shell International Eastern Trading Company (SIETCO) handles the trading of exports manufactured by the Bukom refinery, LNG Trading and other oil products. SIETCO is a vital link in Shell's global trading network and a major market player across the whole of Asia Pacific.
    • Shell Upstream International's regional office for its Asia businesses, which includes the management of an integrated business unit, comprises its exploration & production, LNG terminals, Gas to Liquids plant, natural gas pipelines and power projects in Asia.  Shell's Upstream International Asia business includes activities in Pakistan, India, Japan, Korea, China, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and New Zealand.

    Shell in Singapore by numbers
Shell set up Singapore’s first oil refinery in 1961. For this, the company was awarded “Pioneer Certificate No. 1” by the Singapore government. Today, the Bukom Refinery is the largest Shell refinery in the world, in terms of crude distillation capacity.

Shell Singapore has since grown in importance and it continues to play a key role in shaping the development of Singapore’s oil and petrochemicals industry.  On its centenary in 1991, Shell received Singapore’s first “Distinguished Partner in Progress” award in recognition of its many invaluable contributions to Singapore.

In September 2000, Shell was awarded the prestigious one-time Millennium Trade Award by the Singapore government in recognition of the company’s significant contribution to the nation’s international trade development over the years.

In May 2010, Shell developed a major integrated oil and petrochemicals complex - comprising a new world-scale ethylene cracker on Bukom Island, a world-scale Mono-Ethylene Glycol (MEG) plant on Jurong Island and enhancements to the existing Bukom Refinery. This multi-billion dollar investment is the single largest investment by Shell in Singapore, and reinforces Shell’s continuing commitment to and confidence in the country.

    Sustainable Development
Shell is committed to a business strategy that generates profits while contributing to the well being of the planet and its people. As a major investor in Singapore, it is fully committed to Sustainable Development, integrating the three essential elements of sustainability – economic, social and environmental and balancing long and short-term priorities. In the process, the needs of the present generation are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Shell has a firm reputation for supporting educational activities, some of which like the Shell Traffic Games and the Shell-Singapore Youth Science Festival have become an integral part of the national school curriculum. Through such programmes involving road safety among children, the teaching of entrepreneurial skills among Singapore’s youth, and other programmes focusing on science and technology, Shell is helping develop the nation’s most precious resource – its people.

Environmental care and responsibility are also key elements of Shell’s commitment to sustainable development. Shell fulfils this by supporting community projects as well as in the way it conducts its activities and operations.
